Dressmaking for Beginners

£110.00

This three week course will introduce you to the world of dressmaking. The course is aimed at those who are comfortable with basic sewing skills and are comfortable with using their sewing machine. If you are an absolute beginner you should attend the “Learn to Sew for beginners” course, which you can find here.

During the course you will learn the following:

  • how to interpret and prepare the pattern for your size;

  • how to measure yourself properly to select the right size from the pattern;

  • how to prepare your fabric for cutting (and being economical with your fabric cutting);

  • preparing your cut out fabric for sewing;

  • how to read the pattern instructions/pattern markings

  • how to make simple adjustments for sizing;

  • assembling/constructing the garment;

  • how to get a professional finish.

During the session, I will guide you through a pattern for a simple top and during this course you will pick up lots of hints and tips.

Each session will be approx 2.5-3 hours (can vary according to questions etc). The first session will be all about understanding the pattern and measuring yourselves and there will be a little “homework” in between sessions. You will have lots of opportunity to work with the tutor and ask questions as it will be a small group of just four people.

The pattern will be included in the course fee and all tuition. We will be using the pattern pictured (New Look 6871) and we will all work the same version. You will be sent a list of materials prior to the session or you are welcome to purchase them all at the Studio on the first session. There will be a selection of appropriate fabrics for the pattern type to choose from, as well as the usual wide range of haberdashery items.
